The Full Moon party of Koh Phangan: notorious around the world. I understand why. Imagine a really long beach, completely filled with really drunk people.
I was very late with my booking my hostel, and I did not have a group of friends I was travelling with at the time. I went to Koh Phangan all by myself, I stayed in a hostel on the other side of the island from all the partying. However, this did not matter as the whole island was fully booked and everyone was going to the party. All hostels had a great party vibe at the time, and we all got ready together! We painted our faces and played drinking games and took a taxi together. Although I was nervous (scared even) going to Koh Phangan by myself, this is where I met a group of friends who I would be travelling with for weeks, and would even end up getting matching tattoos with!

I found out I had a strange talent for painting bodies. A talent which is rarely useful, but this time came in handy. Everyone wanted me to paint their faces!

It is a beautiful sight, there are lights and bright colours everywhere. Everyone is dressed up and body painted and there is music everywhere!
One thing I wish to warn you for are the fire limbo, fire jumprope and fire hoop. Although these things seem like fun, you shouldn’t participate (especially when drunk!) I have met so many travellers who were completely burnt because they got stuck in the jumprope and had third degree burns! Please be very careful with this!
It is also very easy to lose each other, I think the group from our hostel has split in half during the first hour. Conclusion: it is all good fun, if you don’t mind seeing people have sex in the sea whilst a few steps further there are people peeing in it. It is pretty safe in my opinion, if you stay away from the crazy fire tricks, don’t wander off into the sea and always stay with at least one person you know. It is a once in a lifetime experience and I really enjoyed it. If you don’t try something, how are you going to know whether you like it or not?
Whilst travelling, this is one of the most important rules I live by –> the No Negativity Rule. I listen to positive stories and recommendations. I do not listen to negative stories or people advising me not to go somewhere. I have found that what one person doesn’t like, I might LOVE. This is advice I would give to everyone!
I am a really big fan of travelling alone, however I think it is safer to visit the Full Moon party with a group of friends/fellow backpackers.
