Sahara desert: crossing it off on my bucketlist

My first time riding a camel, it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. Super uncomfortable, but fun!
As we left for our night camping in the desert, the weather was nice and calm. It was sunny and there was hardly any wind. However, a storm awaited us….

However, after 40 minutes of riding the camels, we were caught in a sand storm. We had to make a stop to wait for the storm to pass. Luckily, because my butt was really hurting! If you are thinking of doing a similar trip into the Sahara or another desert, let me give you one very important tip: wear long sleeves and long pants, sunglasses and a thin scarf around your head. When the sand hits you with this much force, it really really hurts and it feels like you are being punched by thousand tiny (travellers jk), by a thousand tiny grains or if you’re using a very extremely harsh scrub. There was literally sand EVERYWHERE, and when I say everywhere I mean everywhere. But I feel really blessed to be able to have experienced it both ways, the wild, dangerous side of the desert but also the calm and beautiful side. Although in the middle of the sandstorm, I was hardly enjoying myself. We had to stop and get off the camels and wait for the storm to pass. As you can see, the entire air around you is just a sandy cloud and you could hardly see the camel in front of you.

The camping is not luxury at all, which is also part of the charm. There are no showers or water. I did not get a lot of sleep at night, as it was just so hot and sandy. At night, there is a traditional Moroccan meal and there is traditional music and dancing. It was a lot of fun.

The sunrise the next morning. Gorgeous world, am I right?
And a few minutes later.

It was cool and pleasant in the desert. We climbed up a sandhill, which, if I might give some unwanted advise, you might want to workout for. It was really tough on the legs. However getting down was easy, you could just slide down, if you didn’t mind having your pants full of sand. After this we went back to the hotel where we jumped in the swimming pool, had breakfast and finally took a shower. I was one of the only ones who was swimming while everyone else was waiting in line for the showers. Trust me: the bus will not leave without you and there is enough time for everyone to shower 🙂 Not just in this situation, but a tip for all travels… Waiting in line is the worst way to spend your holiday time.
