Marrakech: pleasant chaos

Majorelle Gardens of Yves Saints Laurent

I arrived at Marrakech airport. I had not arranged any pick-up throughout my hostel, because stubborn as I am, I thought I was experienced in negotiating and thought I could arrange it cheaper. Of course my whiteblond hair screams “TOURIST”. End of story: I ended up paying a lot more than if I had paid my hostel’s fare. Oh well, you have to take the gamble sometimes. But YOU can learn from this 🙂 Unless you are much better than me at negotiating or just want some practice, I would advise arranging a pick-up.

Vegetable couscous & chicken tajine at the Djemaa El Fna square. It was delicious! (Btw this is for 2 people, not just me haha)

Around the Djemaa El Fnaa square, there are many cute, cheap restaurants with roof terraces that have a great view over the busy square. The square is also great for shopping, just make sure to negotiate the price to at least half of what they are asking you for! Trust me!

I am a notorious tea consumer. I don’t want to know how much money I spent on the morrocan mint tea in these three weeks…

In Marrakech, it is really hot (not the nice kind of hot) and humid so you might want to book a hostel/hotel with a swimmingpool and/or a roof terrace.

I stayed at Kammy Hostel, which was amazing! 9/10! Great complimentary breakfast, with traditional morrocan food. Amazing roof terrace, many games to play and the nicest owners!
Bahia palace is a must-visit when in Marrakech. It has the most amazing colourful mosaic!
I bought the dress/kaftan at the Djemaa El Fna market.
The entire palace is this beautiful and colourful! I took so many great photos here. I really recommend visiting!

The culture in Morocco is very different from Europe’s culture, so you might find yourself feeling uncomfortable wearing shorts or tanktops. I mostly wore loose long pants and maxi dresses, and sometimes, like in the picture, a regular dress. Of course, you don’t have to do this, but it’s just a little tip. You are not going to be having fun when you are constantly very self conscious about your outfit, is what I experienced.
